This is a well-made and very capable case, but it is a soft case in appearance only. And this is a good thing, because it offers hard case protection at a soft case weight of only 6.39 lbs. High-quality, professional-grade bass guitar gig bags typically weigh between 6.0 and 8.5 pounds and typically offer no structural protection for an instrument.
Structurally Sound to Protect Your Bottom End Treasure
The SKB 1SKB-SCFB4 is a hybrid “soft case” for universal-shaped (P and J body shapes) electric bass guitars that utilizes a heavy-duty, rigid high-density Molded EPS foam interior core wrapped in a rugged 600 Denier ballistic nylon exterior.
Even though this is labeled as a soft case or premium gig bag alternative, SKB explicitly notes that the internal core uses the exact same “hard-core” rigid EPS foam insert grade found in their traditional hardshell cases.
Just How Strong Is It?
Not sure. I’m not about to destroy it to find out – that might be in another video. I weigh 195 pounds and can stand on the case while it is laying flat on a solid floor with no perceptible deflection.
Does it offer as much protection as a full on premium hard case? No…
Yet it offers far superior protection versus a completely soft case – the kind that you can fold in half once the instrument is removed. (Or fold in half with the instrument inside…YIKES!) Soft gig bags are great protection against scratches and scuffs and a convenient way to carry an instrument around town under your own close supervision. I have several soft gig bags that work great.
Would I Fly With It?
Yes. I specifically bought this case to go on a recent cross country flight. I wanted to be prepared with a case that was robust enough to be gate checked yet light enough to easily carry. On the first leg of the journey from San Diego to Raleigh, I did gate check. The process is easy, just bring the instrument through TSA as if its a carry on and give it to the personnel at the gate check in counter to be hand loaded into the aircraft along with strollers and wheel chairs and such. None of the automated conveyor belts and multiple drop and crush opportunities as checked luggage.
But…
Upon arrival in Raleigh, there was a delay in getting the hand loaded luggage off the plane. I watched from the jetway as a luggage mover sat at the bottom of a short motorized ramp to receive luggage. A baggage handler in the plane put my bass on the conveyer and it was removed and stood up vertically on its bottom by the handler on the ground. And then it immediately tipped over and fell flat onto the tarmac. I was not distressed at all because I know how strong the case is, and I added padding to cushion and prevent any movement of the SRFF806 inside the case. And yes, there was no damage to the case or its contents.
This Case Will Not Stand Up Vertically
Design flaw? Maybe. Maybe the designers thought no one would stand the case up and lean it against a wall like every other guitar case since the invention of the guitar case. Even so, this is an excellent bass case, or, at least, a very good bass case in search of excellence.
Accessory Space
Accessory space is limited if you expect an all-in-one solution. Even though there are multiple compartments their shape and size is limiting. There is a dedicated strap compartment on the outside that will carry my favorite LM Products Long Worn S-Clef Rustic Padded Bass Strap when folded. But you will not get anything larger than an original Polytune in the other outer compartments and nothing larger than a set of strings in the inner compartment. You will have plenty of room for picks, small tools, pad of paper, pens and that sort of thing.
Comfort
This case is quite light at only 6.39 lbs. Very comfortable in backpack position with easily adjustable and adequately padded straps. The typical 2-piece, velcroed padded nylon handle carries at a good angle.
Conclusion
The 1SKB SCFB4 is a robust and practical bass case for around town and travel. I would buy it again, even with the tipping hazard which can be worked with once you’re aware of it. I have not compared it side-by-side with comparable cases, but at around $180, you could spend a lot more for a gig bag with a lot less protection.
