Duff McKagan is set to join Jane’s Addiction after the band’s bassist Eric Avery announced he was quitting on Monday via Twitter.
“That’s it,” Avery wrote to his followers. “With equal parts regret and relief the Jane’s Addiction experiment is at an end.”
Avery, who co-founded the group in 1985 and played on its first two albums, steadfastly refused to participate in any reunions after they broke up in 1991 but finally gave in and returned to the lineup in 2008. Even then, he avoided appearing in publicity photos with the band and declined to write new material for what would be Jane’s first album since 2003’s Strays.
“Things got kind of ugly,” front man Perry Farrell told Billboard, when it came time to working on the band’s first new album with Avery in nearly two decades. “The head butting really came out when we tried to write.”
Now the band is hoping to resume the sessions with McKagan.
To Avery’s Twitter followers, the departure didn’t come as a complete surprise. He had been using his page to count down the dates on the band’s recent Australian tour, which wrapped up in Perth on Sunday.
“Two down,” he wrote on Feb. 21. “Five to go.”
He will most likely resume his solo career, which he left off with 2008’s Help Wanted.
After Avery announced his departure, Farrell responded in his on inimitable style. “Slipping out of that shell of a past,” he wrote. “Wow we’re on to something faster now. And so worth the wait.”
