Plays like butter…I just had a chance to try a set of Fodera’s light gauge nickels on my 5 string. Very zingy, yet punchy, for a nickel round. They felt a little edgy at first, not sticky, but you could almost feel a sharpness to the edges sliding up and down the neck. They mellowed after a couple hours and now they feel great – and sound great!
The Fodera Light Nickel Roundwound 4120 set is on the flexible side and not only because of the gauge which is 40/60/80/100/120, but because of its round core, which is inherently more flexible than a hex core. These are not exposed core stings like the Labellas I had used previously, and that coupled with the lighter gauge and lower tension required a little extra setup and break in, and it was worth it!
Nice touches on the packaging include a stamped date on the inside, an installation flyer, and individual zip lock bags per string – nice if you want change back and forth between sets or need to use only one as a replacement.
I would buy them again. They are competitively priced with other premium strings. I’ll check back after a couple months with the road test results.
From Fodera
Most small, custom builders are content to simply buy strings made by large string manufacturers and put their name on the package. That would be a lot easier, but experience tells us that the tone and playability of our instruments would suffer. Fodera Bass Guitar Strings are our own, completely proprietary bass strings crafted by just three people in small batches. We use a combination of hand-work and proprietary machinery to perfectly wind our strings from the very finest materials available – materials that are used by manufacturers of some of the finest concert pianos in the world. This combination of small shop craftsmanship / quality control and the finest materials / tools available combine to make what we hope you will agree are truly exceptional bass guitar strings. Our strings have been continually refined over the past twenty years to ensure that they are the perfect complement to our handcrafted instruments as well as any other bass guitar.
